STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
connecting and educating students

EDUCATION
Hello Design - Hello Design is a passion project I started with Stratford Hall School. Hello Design is a program where students learn to explore and create different projects by going through the steps of design thinking. Each day we dove into exciting adventures of creativity through fusing science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM). In our Junior school classes we explored the questions of how computers work, the history of technology and figuring out how the internet connects us and shares information. In our Senior school classes we jumped into learning about the fundamentals of design, not just design thinking, but how to create projects to enhance people's experiences through design. We learned how to execute these projects by learning how to use the Adobe Creative Suite tools.

Design ChallengeI was given a challenge to design a lecture and activity that taught 9 to 11 year olds about the process of design. I wanted to concentrate the learning experience on understanding the process of design. I focused on showing them that they should not be afraid to fail, ask questions, and that the most important lesson is to make mistakes, learn from them and try again. Design is all around us and the inventions we use every day came-to-be by the designer either making a mistake and/or creating more than hundreds of different prototypes. This process led to the amazing designs we use today.

CANSKATE: Skate Canada Learn to Skate Program
As a coach, I have the amazing opportunity to play and collaboratively work with kids to create an imaginative world filled with sweet candy, noodle monsters, super heroes, chickens and dinosaurs. Every week is a new adventure and we all get to learn something new. I watch educational childrens' programs to keep up to date on the newest and coolest animal facts and storylines; so I can incorporate them into my lessons. One of the most important things I have learned when playing with kids is that it is just as important to allow the kids to discover their own journeys as it is helping them harness their curiosity and imaginations through engaging activities.

FIRST YEAR PROGRAM
As a First Year Advisor, it is my role to help students with their transition into university life. I do this by designing informative welcome packages, organizing weekly social and educational workshops and helping to answer any questions they may have about the program. My favorite event is planning our Welcome Day activity. This is when I get to think of fun and creative ways for our students to connect with each other and for the students to gain a sense of  familiarity with the types of projects they'll be producing in our program. This year, our students were given an egg in which they had to pick, name, and give a backstory to their egg. In addition to the egg, they were also given a with a limited amount of materials, design a structure that will help protect their new egg friend from crashing to the ground. This event also gave me the opportunity to put a face to the new students and to get to know them better.

RECRUITMENT
In recruitment, I learn how to connect with potential students and how to help them find a program that best fits them. I also communicate and educate parents about their child’s application process and future within our program. I design, develop and present presentations and share my experience- on why I decided to choose Simon Fraser University and the School of Interactive Arts and Technology as my program- to domestic and international potential students.
